Mental Health is so important in 2020. Talking is everything to share problems. We were delighted to spend the morning of Sep 23rd with one of England's greatest ever Test Match bowlers, Monty Panesar.

Monty  made his Test debut in 2006 and was the 631st player to play for England. His success saw him win over 50 caps, taking 167 Test wickets making him 21st on the all time list and the 4th highest ever spinning wicket taker.

Monty talked honestly about his drive to the top and his regret at not adapting his game and playing 80 times for his country. He talked of the elation in getting his first test wicket when he removed Sachin Tendulkar in India in 2006 and his best batting display with Jimmy Anderson saving the 1st Test in Cardiff in 2009.

His biggest fear was catching a bowl and the pressure he felt when the bowl was in the air and the crowd were breathing down your neck.

He talked about the transition from being a National hero to his career retirement and the pressures in starting a new adventure in life.

He answered every question with wit, humour and he really engaged with the students. What an inspiration.

We talked about mental health affecting the biggest and best sports stars as well as everyday people. Talking is the key and not hiding these feelings.

We are honoured that @LetsLocalise arranged this for us and we thank Monty for his time.

  • About this session A lovely and inspiring session with students considering young people's aspirations are set early - as young as age seven - and do not change enough over time. It is a great example of a community activism to help educators bring classroom learning to life. Thanks, Monty for your time and you are truly inspirational.
